When John informed me a few weeks ago that we were not going to go to our normal church on Easter I was a little surprised. He told me that we would be having a morning "Easter" service in the new area that he is trying to plant a Church. This meant that I had to get all the kids dressed in their best "dirty" clothes, load up and drive out to the slums, spray down for fleas, pack our lunches, and sit in a hot little, overcrowded shack with dirty floors, stray dogs and mosquitos. My first reaction to this news, in my mind, was "THAT is not how I want to spend my Easter." Now I don't even have to tell you why those those thoughts are wrong. Completely wrong! We are missionaries and we are here to love on the people and that doesn't end because I want to spend a Holiday comfy in my clean, Peruvian church. God reminded me that we are here because He is Risen. And for me to not go out to our area 0f ministry would defeat the entire purpose for us being here as well as the power of Easter.
We went as a family and there were no pretty Easter dresses, Cadbury Eggs or Easter Baskets. But there were about 15 believers gathered in very humble surroundings ready to worship the Lord, fellowship together and rejoice that the tomb was empty. It was completely counter cultural to what I grew up with, but it was one of the most memorable Easter Experiences I have ever had. I'm glad that I decided that was the BEST way to spend MY Easter.
