HELP! I have to order curriculums for a 3rd grader, 1st grader and Pre-K/Kindergartner. I really need help deciding what to use and I want ALL advice that I can get from you guys.
Here's what I need or don't need:
Don't need a math program (we use RightStart mathematics)
Need a Reading program (for 2nd grade on up)
English
Spanish Program
Social Studies/American History (very important since we are living in anotoher culture)
Science
I have a good spelling program
The little ones can do RightStart and Hooked on Phonics for math and reading!
I don't need to use just ONE program; a mish-mosh is okay or if there is a program that is great with everything that is okay.
I do not like a ton of worksheets.
I like hands-on!
But then I have 3 kids to homeschool and a baby, so I need something that doesn't take FOREVER (like the Noah Plan) to plan. And I can't do Konos b/c I won't have the English resources in Lima, Peru.
I will not have a ton of literature at my disposal. Is there a program that comes with books for each year?
Please help!!!!!
Can you believe that in 5 1/2 months we will be back to being together everyday again. It will be quite an adjustment for me, but one I am looking forward to.

We just started with Sonlight for kindergarten. You can really customize it for your needs. It comes with all the science stuff you will need, and best of all, you get all the literature. It's used by lots of international m's because it includes just about everything you'll need, and it's more hands-on and literature based than workbooks. It doesn't take much time to prepare either. I've been very pleased, and Benjamin has done well with it. www.sonlight.com

i don't homeschool, but i have a friend who does and she uses my fathers world curriculum. she has two that are being homeschooled and two more that are too young. i know that she loves the program. just something to look at maybe :). pretty sure it is myfathersworld.com other wise just google it.

I have been looking at the Sonlight program too. I think I will be able to pick one with all the Science and Literature and use it for Layton and Elijah just gearing their projects to their age levels rather than teaching two different levels of science/literature.

I have loved using Common Sense Press- Learning Language Arts Through Literature. You can go on-line and print a copy of a lesson from any of their books. Rachel was always a book level above her grade level. You can order the text books and the books from CBD. The curriculum suggest books that are classic reading. In the younger grades you have more books...older grades you have less books but they are longer also. I will probably use them again when we are back to homeschooling.

Note: I did not like level 1 (blue). We skipped to red book for 1st grade after using 100 easy lessons in K.

One more comment. I had to sleep on it to put my brain in gear after Portuguese. When Rachel and Rebekah were little I used the Light and the Glory(series) for American History. I started when Rebekah was in Kindergarten and Rachel 2nd grade. There are Three books in the series. There are also Three levels of books. The first level is a coloring book with simple phrases at the bottom of the page. The second level is a Reader for older children to read about 4-5th grade. But I read it aloud to the girls as they colored their pictures. Then I would go back and ask them questions about what I read. Then when Sarah was in K I did it again with her and Rachel & Rebekah(To this day my girls all love to color). The third level of books are thick. I started reading the Light and the Glory and it was wonderful but by page 200 or 225 I gave up. There may be 500 pages in the book. It is hard reading. The author is Peter Marshall. The first level is called an activity book and the second is "for children" Great christian perspective.I have other tips about these books if you decide to use them.
For other History I have always used Greenleaf Press. In starts in the old testament and goes to Egypt,Greece & Rome etc.We did this all together. The first year I also used this as our bible also(OT study). For Rachel last year (7th) we also added the Story of the World by Susan Wise B(rown or auer). She has 4 books in this series. Rachel also read Gwenivieve Foster books that talks about what was going on in the world during time in history....but your not ready for this...I love history and i do know we will miss out on some history experiences with my little ones that the oldest three had by going to historical sites in the states. The internet will also be a great source. Some museums have virtual tour of history and of museums themselves.
Also I agree with the comment about Apologia for science. It is great. I have only looked at the younger grades used 7th grade.

We are going to use My Father's World. Someone else mentioned it too. We are leaving ABEKA to drop the busywork. This is a Charlotte Masonish curriculum, and we chose it because it brings the kids together for everything except reading and math!!!
